If there is anything surer in this world than death and taxes it would most certainly be that whenever a big movie hits there will soon follow a gaggle of low-rent, quickie cash-ins. Asylum pictures is famous for these kinds of movies, but they certainly didn’t invent the idea. Remember how popular movies like Robocop and The Terminator were in the 80s? Well the folks behind these three sci-fi action yarns sure took note of it. These movies certainly aren’t as pretty as their blockbuster big brothers, but are they as entertaining? Well, I’ll let you be the judge of that, but I’d say your first instinct is probably correct.
HANDS OF STEEL
When an industrialist’s profitable, but environmentally unsafe practices are about to be exposed by a prominent scientist, the man dispatches a cyborg assassin to take care of the situation. When the killing machine starts to show human feelings he is also targeted for elimination and most hit the road, taking on arm-wrestling truckers, robotic hit-women and John Saxon along the way.
ASSASSIN
When an evil scientist bent on world domination sends a human-looking android assassin to take out several world leaders, including the President of the United States, it is up to a retired CIA agent to find a way to stop the seemingly unstoppable machine.
R.O.T.O.R
It seems something has gone terribly wrong when an automated law enforcement officer starts issuing the ultimate punishment for the tiniest infractions. Now it is up to its creator to stop its reign of terror

Welcome back b-movie fans. I’ve got another month-long event planned for you that I think you’ll enjoy. In celebration of Black History Month, DMD is proud to present six films starring one of the coolest dudes the public domain has to offer. That’s right, he’s Fred “The Hammer” Williamson and we’ve got him all month long. This week I bring you three movies starring Fred as hard-hitting Chicago cop Robert Malone.
BLACK COBRA
Malone must stand alone against a gang murderous bikers in order to protect a woman who has witnessed one of their brutal crimes.
BLACK COBRA 2
Malone travels to The Philippines in order to learn the techniques of Interpol, but becomes involved in a web of intrigue after his wallet is stolen at the airport.
BLACK COBRA 3
Malone teams up with Interpol again as he travels to Manila in order to track down a stolen weapons shipment.

What we have here is the original 1970s Italian movie “Inglorious Bastards”, which has nothing to do with the recent movie of the same name, other than it is set in WWII. The movie has been re-cut by American distributors to focus more on the Fred Williamson character. Whatever you call it, it is a great, fun, over the top action flick with some good characters and a lot of stuff going for it.

Did you ever wonder why the T-1000 never had much to say in Terminator 2? Well, this is the movie that tells you why. Despite Robert Patrick’s dubious skills in this one, the movie is a heck of a treat for crap cinema fans. It plays like a K-Tel Records compilation of 80s action movies. You’ve got elements of Mad Max, The Terminator, Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone and Return of the Jedi (you’ll know it when you see it).
The movie opens in 2026 and a lone warrior is being chased across a post apocalyptic landscape by a gang of killers. A gun fight and multiple explosions follow. He takes refuge in an old temple and finds the The Spear of Destiny, or at least the tip anyway. Touching this somehow shoots him back in time to the present (1986).
Robert Patrick and his girl our out doing, whatever. They are assaulted by a gang of bikers, but our warrior from the future steps in, beats some ass and is shot for his trouble. With his drying words, he asks the girl to find the rest of the spear and keep it from evil. Doing this will, somehow, stop the end of the world from happening.
OK, still with me? Well this movie has everything you want in a trashy action movie. We’ve got Natzies, Amazon Warriors, 2 or 3 full-on Kung-Fu fights, a Bruce Lee clone, hidden temples, melting bikers, Women fighting to the death over a pit of crocodiles and more. You’ve even got the second most holy relic in Christendom (right behind the Holy Grail) stowed away in a hotel room toilet tank for safe keeping at one point. The only thing you could ask for is maybe midgets. Oh wait, there is an ENTIRE TRIBE of them running around in the jungle. This may very well be the perfect movie.

Professional hit man Shatter is not having a good week at work. At the start of the movie he is carrying out a contract to assassinate an African dictator. After the job is done he heads to Hong Kong to get paid and lay low for awhile. Unfortunately the people who hired him pull a nasty double-cross and he finds himself pursued by the mod, the police and the brother of the man he’s just killed. Relying on aid from a martial arts master and his own bad-assery, Shatter must find a way to save his skin and get a little payback.
I’ve been listening to a lot of the Hammicus podcast lately (see the link to the right) and I’ve been wanting to put something up from either of the studios. Unfortunately most of their output isn’t public domain. However, as soon as I saw that the Hammicus guys covered Hammer’s entry into the action/martial arts genre, I had to put it up. I hope you enjoy it.

Joe Don Baker is Mitchell, an abrasive alcoholic police detective. Very much an anti-hero Mitchell often ignores the orders of his superiors and demonstrates disdain for by-the-book police work as well as normal social graces. The film also stars John Saxon and Martin Balsam as the criminals Mitchell pursues and Linda Evans shows up as Mitchell’s prostitute girlfriend.

A group of female jewel thieves stage a daring jailbreak and head into the swamp in search of the stashed loot from their previous job. Joining them is another inmate, who is really an undercover cop hoping they will lead her to the missing jewels. When the police woman’s cover is blown, her companions take her hostage and, because this is a Roger Corman movie and Roger knows what we want, the group begins to fight amongst themselves and cat fights ensue.

When a young girl from a wealthy family gets involved with a religious cult, her father hires martial arts master / ex-cop / private eye Leo Fong to rescue her. When the detective discovers that the cult is a front from a criminal organization he must gather a group of martial arts masters and general bad-asses to help him infiltrate their compound get the girl out. Cameron Mitchell stars as the weird cult leader, so you know it is going to be awesome.

An evil criminal mastermind named Mr. Giant has kidnapped a leading scientist in hopes of using his new invention, the N bomb to hold the wiorld hostage. The only one with a chance of stopping the evil plot is Agent 00, a Philippino, little person, super spy, Interpol agent loaded with gadgets and martial arts mastery. He can kick ass, but, like Bond, he is just as at home romancing the ladies.
Its dumb, its exploitative and it is a whole helluva lot of fun. Not only will star Weng Weng have to thwart an army of bad guys and evil henchmen, he’ll have to fend off a pesky pedophile who thinks he is a little kid. There is also a sequel called The Miracle Kid that may show up here eventually.
